Before I begin, let me say that I know there are two schools of thought on church signs. Some people love them and some hate them. While I can appreciate the occasional clever sign, I find them lacking. They are often an attempt to get people to come to church through guilt or silliness. The guilt loaded ones just make me mad. The attempts at being jovial bring a smile from time to time, but in a world of memes and captioned pictures across social media, I doubt that a smile is going to bring someone into the church. My favorite one lately is a poke at the futility of the sign itself. It read “Blah Blah Blah..Come to Church”.
The stationary church sign may be a dying medium, but the living church sign is not. That’s right. We are the living church signs. Our actions as Christians lived out in the world are very much relevant. People notice kind and loving acts. They draw to someone who listens well and gives thoughtful advice without judgement. Jesus drew crowds not only because of His miracles, but more so because of what He talked about and how He treated people.
Being part of the Body of Christ is an awesome privilege. As a Christian and a Church member we are always on display for Him. How we treat others and how we respond to the world around us are powerful ways in which we let people know that the church is a good place to check out. Do what you want with the church signs, but make sure that your message is loud and clear. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.” Romans 1:16
