I like detail in most things. Detail gives us security in that we feel something is thought out and thoroughly considered. In art, for example, I am intrigued by the detail that great artists place in a painting or sculpture. It somehow makes it more authentic to me.
In science, the more detail that is seen or known can make all the difference in the world. The microscope opened new realms for scientists in the 1600’s. They would eventually be able to see into the cells and DNA which opened new chapters in human understanding.
My point is the closer we get to anything, the more we can know it and hopefully appreciate it. In the Book of James, we are told: “come near to God and He will come near to you”. The same principle is at work here. The closer we get to God the more we see the multi-faceted lover of our souls. The deeper my understanding the more attainable the eternal attributes of God become. I grow in my relationship with Him the closer I move towards Him. He reciprocates by moving ever closer to me because that fulfills His original intention. He wants to be in relationship with each of us.
I reject a programmed discipleship format. I believe our relationship with God is much like all our human relationships. The more I invest the more I receive. Wherever you are right now you are invited to move closer. As that becomes enlightening and life-changing, move even closer. God’s promise is that it keeps getting better and better. To quote my favorite country music group, “The closer you get, the further I fall.” Everything is enhanced with the detail that comes with up close and personal. If you don’t believe me…move a little closer and see for yourself.
