When I was a boy I was part of an event that taught leadership. One part of this adventure was being dropped off in the woods in the dark with only a sleeping bag. We were instructed to not talk and only call out if we truly needed help. I can still remember how alone I felt. It was pitch black. No flashlight, no tent, only a sleeping bag as mentioned. When morning came I arose from within my bag and looked around. As it turns out they had placed us only a few yards apart and we were all in the same general area. Not only that, but our leaders were within the same range. I was very relieved. Any anxiety I might have felt was unnecessary. I was safe all along.
I have found the same thing is true when it comes to our lives in this world. There are so many times where we can feel all alone and in the dark. It can happen in crowded rooms, it can happen alone at home, it can happen in functional and dysfunctional families. It just happens. The reality that I found mirrors my youthful revelation. As alone as we can feel and as dark as life may seem at times, God is only a breath away. All we have to do is call out and then we find we were never alone at all.
God wants you to know the security and fullness of the relationship He offers. You don’t have to walk alone. He is right beside you. James 4:8 tells us “to come near to God and He will come near to you.” It is His promise.
